The short answer: A drain that clogs again and again in the same spot is telling you the pipe, not the clog, is the problem. The usual causes are grease coating the walls, roots growing in through a joint, scale narrowing old cast iron, or a sagging section where waste settles. Clearing it treats the symptom for a few weeks. Fixing the cause ends the cycle.
Grease builds a new clog on the old walls
Kitchen lines clog repeatedly because each clearing cuts a hole through grease that is still coating the pipe. The hole is smaller than the pipe, so it catches debris faster than the last one did. It is like shoveling a path through snow that keeps drifting back.
Hydro jetting breaks the cycle because it scrubs the walls back to full diameter. If your kitchen line has been cabled twice in a year, the conversation should shift from clearing to cleaning, or to the habits sending grease down in the first place.

Roots find the water in your line
Tree roots enter sewer lines through joints, especially in older clay pipe, and once inside they grow into a net that catches everything. Yards along Sycamore Creek and the river bottom have the trees and the moisture to make this a yearly event.
A cable can cut roots back, and for a solid pipe that may buy a year or more. A camera shows how much root mass there is and whether the joint is damaged. When roots have cracked or offset the pipe, repair is the end of the cycle, not another cutting.
Scale and sags: the quiet causes
Cast iron scales from the inside until the bore is rough and narrow, snagging paper and waste that smooth pipe would pass. And a section of line that has settled into a belly holds water permanently, so solids settle there every single day.
Both show clearly on a camera. Scale responds well to jetting. A belly does not respond to any cleaning for long, because gravity is the problem. Replacing that section is the permanent fix, and it is usually a short section, not the whole line.
What to do about a repeat clog
First, stop pouring chemical cleaners in. They do not fix any of the four causes above and they can harm older pipe and septic systems. Second, get the line cameried on the next clog instead of just cleared. One look inside replaces years of guessing.
Then match the fix: jetting for grease and scale, root cutting plus monitoring for solid pipe with roots, or a spot repair for the cracked joint or sagging section. Our sewer camera and drain pages explain each option in plain terms.
Quick Reference
| Situation | Likely cause or next step |
|---|---|
| Same kitchen drain, monthly | Grease-coated walls; jet it |
| Main line, yearly, near trees | Roots; camera then decide |
| Old home, rough slow drains | Cast iron scale; jetting helps |
| Clog returns in days | Sag or break; camera needed |
